Emo (short for emotional) is a style of punk-rock music that gave birth to a whole generation of style and attitude. Emo style is mostly black mixed with an assortment of bright colors; this is the same for the emo hairstyles. Short emo hair involves spikes, different colors, Mohawks and the covering of one or both of the eyes.

Mohawk
A Mohawk is a great style for short emo hair. The hair can be cut in the shape of a Mohawk or shaped that way with styling gel.

Color
Color is a big part of the emo hairstyle. Shorter hair can have a combination of several colors or one color (red, green, pink, yellow, aqua, blue or purple) layered with primarily black hair.

Cut
The cut of emo hair is very important for making the style stand out. The cut is usually very choppy and uneven with layers.

Spikes
Spiky hair is obtained with protective spray, blow drying and hair gel. Some short emo styles have very subtly spiky hair that is similar to tussled bed hair, while others choose to have more defined spikes.

Bangs
Side or front bangs are used to cover one eye or both eyes. Colored bangs are big in emo hairstyling.

The indie emo look - (best for girls and guys 16-20)
Dyed-black short hair with bangs short and cut straight across the forehead. Spikey in the back, slightly greasy. Really light blonde hair on girls often works too.
Piercings. The more the better.
Jewelry. The more the better. Beads, etc.
Horn-rim/thick black frames/cat eye glasses (this works for all three types).
Tight, fadded shirts with random slogans. It should look like it could have been bought at a thrift store but you didn't (but you really did). It takes a while to master that one.
Dark denim jean jackets.
Messenger bag covered in patches and pins (that you actually bought at shows).
Tight pants, sometimes cuffed once or twice but never more!
Black or blue converse shoes.
